Switzerland was still one of Europe's poorest countries at the time. Karl Elsener initially worked to combat poverty and unemployment in the Schwyz basin, creating jobs and assisting in stemming the flow of emigration.

For the first time, he supplied the soldier's knife to the Swiss Army in 1891. In 1897, he created the Swiss Officer's and Sports Knife – now known as the iconic Swiss Army Knife – laying the groundwork for a thriving company capable of competing on the global stage.
